Fourth Graders are reading Serafina and the Black Cloak by Robert Beatty and completing many different activities on Edmodo, as well as classroom extension activities, discussing vocabulary and character development.  This novel's setting takes place at the Biltmore Estate in nearby Asheville, NC.  Our Mull 4th graders are looking forward to exploring, in real life, the setting of this historical fiction novel as they will visit the Biltmore Estate in November.
Serafina was selected by Bookmarks as part of the statewide Summer Reading Program. It was also selected as an Okra Pick for representing “the best in Southern Literature” by the Southern Independent Booksellers Association.
This novel actually crosses many genres such as historical fiction, mystery, and fantasy.
Mrs. Abele, one of our fourth grade teachers, remarked that her students are really enjoying the novel and extension activities.
One hundred and twenty-four copies were obtained for our school through Disney Hyperion at http://reobert-beatty.com and was initiated by our fourth and fifth grade teachers and Mrs. Fore.
